How to check a business name in Pakistan (SECP & trademark rules)

In Pakistan, a business name can be rejected at two different doors. The SECP controls the corporate registry: every private limited company, single-member company and association files its name through the SECP's name reservation process, and the registrar rejects names that are identical or confusingly similar to an existing registration, or that use regulated words without approval. The IPO-Pakistan separately controls trademarks — the thing that actually protects your brand from copycats once you're selling.

Words that trigger extra scrutiny: terms tied to regulated sectors — Bank, Insurance, Trust, Exchange, Credit, Finance, Securities, Fund, Stock — are reserved for licensed institutions. "National" and "Pakistan" imply government connection and require a no-objection certificate. "University", "Board", "Council", "Authority", "Chamber" and similar words are restricted or reserved. And purely descriptive names like "Best Trading Company" are routinely refused or, if accepted, are impossible to trademark because they describe the product rather than identify your brand.

The naming pattern that survives everything: an invented or evocative two-word name — like "DesiKart" or "Zamin Organic" — where no word is a regulated term and the combination is distinctive. Invented names are the easiest to register, the easiest to trademark and the easiest to buy a domain for.

This checker is a heuristic first pass, not a legal opinion. Availability can only be confirmed inside the official registries — always run the SECP and IPO searches above (or ask a local registration agent) before paying any registration or filing fee.
